Overview
Marshall D. Teach — better known as Blackbeard — is one of the most iconic antagonists in One Piece, the man who stole Whitebeard's Gura Gura no Mi and formed the most feared pirate crew in the New World. His OP16-080 card incarnation translates that power-stealing theme directly into the card game: a Black/Yellow leader from the OP16 set whose on-attack effect reaches into the opponent's hand and forces a discard, applying relentless pressure while advancing the board with the full Blackbeard Pirates crew.
In the current OP17 post-banlist meta (842 registered players since the October 12, 2026 banlist), Marshall.D.Teach (OP16-080) holds 1.7% meta share (14 of 842 players) with a 48.9% non-mirror win rate across 47 matches. The deck sits squarely in the mid-tier: it has game against every matchup in the field, runs a consistent 20-card Blackbeard crew core that every list shares, and costs significantly less than the top-tier alternatives once you remove Borsalino from the flex slots.
How Blackbeard wins
Marshall.D.Teach (OP16-080) is a 5 DON!! cost Black/Yellow leader with 5000 power. His leader ability reads: once per turn, when this leader attacks, you may look at the top card of the opponent's life area and add it to their hand. This forces a discard from the opponent's hand whenever it triggers, shrinking their counter resources while your crew applies board pressure.
The deck's clock is fast. The core crew — Laffitte, Shiryu, Catarina Devon, Jesus Burgess, Vasco Shot, Doc Q, Sanjuan Wolf, and Van Augur — all cost between 1 and 5 DON!! and all carry the Blackbeard Pirates type. The Fullalead stage (OP09-099) is the deck's engine: while it is in play, all your Blackbeard Pirates characters gain +1000 power, turning a board of mid-cost crew into an intimidating attacking force. With Fullalead active and four attacking characters, an opponent playing Xebec or Luffy finds their counters depleted faster than they can replace them.
Marshall.D.Teach OP09-093 (the Wanted Poster version) is the deck's mid-game threat: a 7-cost character with a powerful on-play effect that removes an opposing character and cannot be countered by characters of 4 cost or less. It arrives on the board precisely when the opponent is trying to stabilize and clears their defensive anchor. Marshall.D.Teach OP16-119 is the premium finisher: a 10-cost character that tutors for a Blackbeard Pirates character from anywhere in the deck and immediately puts it into play, creating a two-card swing that forces the opponent to answer two simultaneous threats or lose their life points.
Zehahahahaha!! (OP16-116) is the deck's answer card: a Black event that bounces an opponent's character back to their hand while simultaneously tutoring for a Blackbeard Pirates character with a cost of 5 or less. It enables tempo swings at exactly the right moment and can be held in hand to surprise an opponent who taps out expecting an open attack phase.

Counts from 21 top-cut decklists. Market prices from TCGplayer via TCGCSV, updated daily. The Borsalino ($37.49) and OP16-119 Teach ($25.19) are the two largest investments in the full competitive list; the rest of the core crew costs under $1.30 per playset and can be acquired for under $20 total. A budget build replacing Borsalino with additional crew members remains competitive at the local level.
Matchups in the OP17 meta
vs. Rocks.D.Xebec (OP17-039) — Unfavorable. Xebec's Red/Blue tempo deck overwhelms the board faster than Blackbeard can deploy his crew. Xebec's ability to attack from the rear and banish characters hits the Fullalead stage before it can generate value. The match is winnable if Blackbeard lands OP09-093 Teach into a threatening board, but Xebec's hand replenishment keeps counters flowing. Hold Zehahahahaha!! for the turn Xebec tries to close out — bouncing the finisher and immediately tutoring Sanjuan Wolf forces a second answer.
vs. Monkey.D.Luffy (OP13-001) — Even. Luffy Red/Green is aggressive but runs out of large bodies quickly. Blackbeard's mid-cost crew holds the board through turns 4–6 while Fullalead keeps attack values above Luffy's counter threshold. Borsalino removes the opponent's key attacker at a point when Luffy has limited hand resources. The game typically reaches a final-turn race; OP16-119 Teach deployed as a two-character swing is often the winning play.
vs. Enel (OP05-098) — Favorable. Enel's Yellow control strategy relies on bouncing characters and gaining life. Blackbeard's crew produces enough low-cost attacks to drain Enel's counters before the life loop closes. The 5 DON!! leader ability accelerates the opponent's hand thinning when Enel is in life-gain mode, preventing the full reset. Keep Zehahahahaha!! in hand until after Enel spends its main event card to avoid getting tempo reset.
vs. Buggy (OP09-042) — Even. Buggy's draw engine can keep up with Blackbeard's hand pressure, but Buggy has no removal for high-cost threats. Landing OP09-093 Teach against Buggy's wide board clears the most valuable attacker and applies a timing advantage. Baby 5 (OP12-112) generates extra hand cards while contesting Buggy's mid-board, sustaining counter availability through the mid-game.
Budget considerations
The full competitive list (with 3–4 Borsalino and 3–4 OP16-119 Teach) runs approximately $160–$185 at current market prices. Without those two slots, the base crew package — 20 Blackbeard Pirates characters plus the Fullalead stage and My Era...Begins!! — costs under $25 for a full 50-card list. This makes OP16-080 Blackbeard one of the most accessible leaders in the current meta for a player building toward a competitive deck: the budget version is functional, and the upgrades are individually replaceable as cards become available.
Baby 5 (OP12-112, $1.70) is the first recommended upgrade from the pure budget list — she provides a hand-advantage effect that the pure crew build lacks. My Era...Begins!! (OP09-096) is the next pick, as the event generates card advantage on a turn when the opponent is trying to board-wipe. Borsalino is the final upgrade and the single card that pushes the deck from local-competitive to regional-competitive.
Who plays this deck
Blackbeard appeals to players who want a mid-range Black deck with a recognizable character theme and a low buy-in. The deck rewards knowing when to hold Zehahahahaha!! and when to deploy OP16-119 Teach — two decisions that separate average results from top-cut finishes. If you enjoy playing the villain of the New World arc with a crew that actually deploys on curve, OP16-080 Marshall.D.Teach is a strong choice for local tournaments and an underrated option for regional events where opponents have not prepared for the steal-and-pressure gameplan.
